We Read

by Kathy Keil

We read...

Sprawled out
a 60s orange and brown paisley couch cradles
spandex turquoise legs flowing over faded blue jeans
heads hanging down, hair floating in space.

Slouched down
black hoods clutching chair backs holding us in place,
single handedly pressing front to cover to back
squeezing out the story.

Posed primly
crossed bald knee jutting out of stylish jeans
resting the spine securely in one hand; the other--
at the ready, finger in flipping formation

Leaning forward
living bookshelves supported by elbows and knees
eyes racing down the page word to word to word
taking us anywhere and everywhere--we go.

Pages turning here...there
...now another...

I both catch and get caught--
me surveying them,
he cutting eyes toward me
at just that second.
