Kiwi

by Kathy Keil

When the gods grow
Discontent on Mt. Olympus,
Tired of nectar and ambrosia,
Zeus decrees,
"Demeter, bring us kiwi.
Sweet and suculent;
Warmed and ripened by Apollo,
Persephone-painted bleeding shades of green
Hidden neath thistledown skin.
Hera, break the phoenix eggs,
Athena, weave a crust,
Aphrodite, now with love will slice,
And sugar sweet handmaidens attend.
Bear it all to Hephaestus' forge
gently baked
gilded golden edge,
thick bubbles
spewing heady scents,
sweet steam--
Ahhhh, to be a just mortal man
eating kiwi everyday!"
