The Hand

by Josh Dunn

The teacher asks a question
Do you know the answer
You suppose you’re the only student in the school who knows the answer
[…]you don’t even raise your hand. You’re looking
out the window. You’re still not going to
raise your hand and there’s some beauty
inside your fingers, which are not drumming,
but lay still and peaceful. She asks the
question again. Outside the window, a hanging
branch, an owl’s hooting, and spring is through the air.
